GeoNetwork

USGIN Catalog and Data Services website released

The USGIN Catalog and Data Services website (http://catalog.usgin.org) hosts several geospatial metadata catalog (CSW) and geospatial data services (WMS, WFS, WCS) implementations and clients. Although the site functions as a showcase of USGIN service implementations, the Catalog Service for the Web service (CSW - http://catalog.usgin.org/geonetwork/srv/en/csw) is a primary metadata node for the U.S. Geospatial Information Network.

The enclosed document explains how to download the GeoNetwork trunk from Eclipse, and then configure the web app to deploy as a Tomcat module (also within Eclipse). This setup allows for streamlined GeoNetwork development, as all necessary development functions are contained within one IDE.

GeoNetwork

"GeoNetwork opensource is a catalog application to manage spatially referenced resources. It provides powerful metadata editing and search functions as well as an embedded interactive web map viewer"

"GeoNetwork opensource has been developed to connect spatial information communities and their data using a modern architecture, which is at the same time powerful and low cost, based on the principles of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) and International and Open Standards for services and protocols (a.o. from ISO/TC211 and OGC)"

USGIN's primary interest in this client/server hybrid application package is its CSW service and ISO 19139 metadata capability. GeoNetwork also include the Geoserver (WMS, WFS, WCS servers) and Intermap (WMS client) Web applications.

Running GeoNetwork 2.4.1 under Tomcat 5.5 on Windows XP

This cookbook describes how GeoNetwork 2.4.1 can be made to work under Tomcat 5.5 (JDK 1.5.0_17) on Windows XP. This document expands on http://trac.osgeo.org/geonetwork/wiki/HowToRunUnderTomcat and assumes that you have been able to successfully install and run GeoNetwork 2.4.1.

The GeoNetwork installer deploys the Jetty Web/servlet engine and McKoi SQL Database DBMS plus 3 Java applications: geonetwork (CSW client/server, and more), geoserver (WMS, WFS, WCS server), and intermap (WMS client). We decided to move the GeoNetwork applications to the Tomcat Web server because our production server is already running Tomcat and because it offers additional functionality (load balancing, etc.) for future growth. In the future, we may also replace McKoi with our existing PostgreSQL DBMS.
