Use of ISO metadata specifications to describe geoscience information resources, v.1.1

Document Information

Type:
Implementation Specification
Document ID:
gin2010-009

Public release of the USGIN ISO 19139 (ISO 19115 and ISO 19119) profile document for metadata describing geoscience resources. Supersedes older versions titled "Use of ISO 19139 xml schema to describe geoscience information resources".

This document is a profile for using ISO19139 xml schema for of ISO 19115 and ISO 19119 metadata. The profile provides guidance for the population of ISO19139 dataset and dataset series documents to enable interoperability of catalog service clients with multiple servers conforming to this profile, with a focus on resources of interest in the geosciences.

Metadata content recommendations

Based on a collection of use cases meant to include the basic collection of reasons for collecting structured metadata, we have developed a content model that includes a minimum content profile for only the simplest discovery applications, and a recommended content profile that allows implementation of the enumerated use cases. This is a good starting point for thinking about what metadata is to be used for and what kinds of content are required to enable that usage. The content specified can be encoded in any of the other metadata content / encoding specifications like ISO 19139, FGDC XML, Dublin core in xml...

USGIN Catalog and Data Services website released

The USGIN Catalog and Data Services website (http://catalog.usgin.org) hosts several geospatial metadata catalog (CSW) and geospatial data services (WMS, WFS, WCS) implementations and clients. Although the site functions as a showcase of USGIN service implementations, the Catalog Service for the Web service (CSW - http://catalog.usgin.org/geonetwork/srv/en/csw) is a primary metadata node for the U.S. Geospatial Information Network.

USGIN Document Repository released

The USGIN Document Repository is an effort to create a document archiving, management, and discovery system that fulfills minimum USGIN ISO 19139 metadata requirements. The Drupal CMS based site is under active development and has the following goals and requirements:

  • Upload files that have not been put on the web yet and generate metadata for them
  • Add links to resources that are already on the web and generate metadata for them
  • Automatically generate ISO 19139 dataset metadata XML records
  • Offer an as easy-as-possible way to enter minimum ISO 19139 metadata
  • Use Search Engine Optimization to expose content to the web
  • Offer some nice way to search the repository
  • Offer a minimal but intuitive workflow for repository management
  • Find an easy way of submitting spatial extent coordinates
  • Remain flexible to adapt to new and changing metadata input and presentation needs

Use of controlled vocabularies in codelists and keywords

Discussion of use of terms from controlled concept vocabularies in xml documents. Applies to ISO19139 codelists, Keywords, and GeoSciML scopedName/Controlled concepts. Recommends a 'ScopedLocalizedTerm' xml element that includes attributes for the concept URI, simple xlink attributes that provide URL for a useful representation, xml:lang for language localization, and a VocabularID URI that identifies the containing controlled vocabulary.

OGC Schema Issues in Relation to CSW

In order to create metadata for both static datasets and dynamic, online services and for use with CSW, the OGC created an xml schema that merges the schema for ISO19115 (dataset metadata) and ISO19119 (service metadata) (see secion D.1.5, page 105 in OGC 07-045). The way that was accomplished was by creating a schema located at http://schemas.opengis.net/csw/2.0.2/profiles/apiso/1.0.0/apiso.xsd. The contents of that schema are quite simple -- it looks like this:
