USGIN Metadata Wizard released

07/19/2010 - 11:42am FGDC CSDGM, USGIN, ISO 19139

The USGIN Metadata Wizard is a metadata-format agnostic metadata creation web-tool that exports its generic, minimum metadata model into various metadata formats and standards such FGDC XML, and ISO 19139 XML files. The goal of the tool is to make new metadata creation as simple as possible while still supporting several metadata standards. Give it a try at http://mw.usgin.org

National Geothermal Data System funded by Department of Energy

05/20/2010 - 8:31am AASG, NGDS, AZGS

The Department of Energy (DOE) awarded a three-year 18-million dollar grant as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to the Association of American State Geologists (AASG).  Eighty-five percent of the funds are slated for the 46 participating states for compiling, digitizing, and documenting data for populating the National Geothermal Data System (NGDS).

USGIN Catalog and Data Services website released

04/15/2010 - 2:40pm USGIN ISO 19139, USGIN, USGIN CSW, USGIN WMS, ISO 19139, CatalogConnector, OGC CSW, OGC WCS, OGC WFS, GeoNetwork, OGC WMS, GeoServer

The USGIN Catalog and Data Services website (http://catalog.usgin.org) hosts several geospatial metadata catalog (CSW) and geospatial data services (WMS, WFS, WCS) implementations and clients. Although the site functions as a showcase of USGIN service implementations, the Catalog Service for the Web service (CSW - http://catalog.usgin.org/geonetwork/srv/en/csw) is a primary metadata node for the U.S. Geospatial Information Network.

Available services and clients at this time:

USGIN Document Repository released

04/15/2010 - 11:23am Drupal, USGIN ISO 19139, USGIN, ISO 19139

The USGIN Document Repository is an effort to create a document archiving, management, and discovery system that fulfills minimum USGIN ISO 19139 metadata requirements. The Drupal CMS based site is under active development and has the following goals and requirements:

  • Upload files that have not been put on the web yet and generate metadata for them
  • Add links to resources that are already on the web and generate metadata for them
  • Automatically generate ISO 19139 dataset metadata XML records
  • Offer an as easy-as-possible way to enter minimum ISO 19139 metadata
  • Use Search Engine Optimization to expose content to the web
  • Offer some nice way to search the repository
  • Offer a minimal but intuitive workflow for repository management
  • Find an easy way of submitting spatial extent coordinates
  • Remain flexible to adapt to new and changing metadata input and presentation needs

USGIN metadata search on ESRI GEO Viewer and GEOSS GEO Portal

11/25/2009 - 3:42pm ESRI

USGIN metadata can now be searched through ESRI's GEO Portal (http://geoss.esri.com) and GEOSS GEO Viewer (http://geoss.esri.com/geoviewer) portals. On the search tab or window select "US GIN" under "Search In" to look for USGIN specific resources.

This is still a work in progress and many kinks have to be worked out. However, we are excited about our ESRI partners' contributions.

DOE selects AZGS to lead deployment of National Geothermal Data System

11/10/2009 - 1:24pm

We are excited to report that on Oct. 30, 2009 Energy Secretary Stephen Chu  announced that a coalition of 40 state geological surveys headed up by the Arizona Geological Survey has been selected to populate the new National Geothermal Data System with relevant state-specific geothermal data by deploying the Geoscience Information Network nationwide.

The Secretary announced awards totaling $338 million for geothermal energy across the country. The AZGS-led project (section 5 in the list) will negotiate to receive $15.7 million over 3 years. AZGS is acting on behalf of the Association of American State Geologists (AASG - www.stategeologists.org).

AZGS is already a partner in the Geothermal Data Coalition, based at Boise State University to design and build the National Geothermal Data System under contract to DOE. AZGS will adapt the Geoscience Information Network (GIN - www.usgin.org) to provide data discovery, access, and exchange services as a component in the developing data system. Other components include a data repository, software applications, vocabularies, data content, network communications, and web portals.

GIN is a collaboration between AASG and the U.S. Geological Survey to integrate geological survey data bases using web services and open source standards in a distributed system.  The service architecture being developed by the USGIN project will be the foundation for the data system.

Transformation tools FGDC to ISO available from NOAA

10/22/2009 - 4:11pm NOAA NESDIS, FGDC CSDGM, ISO 19139

Thu Sep 17 08:39:08 CDT 2009.

The Metadata Transform Working Group (made of members from the FGDC Metadata Working Group, NOAA’s National Ocean Survey, National Geophysical Data Center, and National Ocean Data Center; the U.S. Geological Survey; and various other organizations) has been collaboratively building transforms for the transition of metadata among standards. As the development of these transforms and libraries for translation of content is a collaborative effort, any questions or comments can be sent to ncddcmetadata at noaa.gov to be passed along to the working group.

USGIN joins CS IDEC in developing the CatalogConnector CSW client

10/14/2009 - 1:17pm CatalogConnector, OGC CSW

USGIN has joined Infrastructura de Dades Expaciales de Catalunya (IDEC) in developing the opensource CSW client CatalogConnector.

(09/28/2009, http://www.geoportal-idec.net/geoportal/cas/noticies.jsp)

To expand on the article, USGIN is contributing to the CatalogConnector in hopes of making the software more user friendly and efficient. As such, USGIN has already contributed code to improve front end user capabilities and optimizations to improve http response speed. If you have any requests or suggestions in regard to the CatalogConnector, please drop us a line.
