Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple, very flexible text format derived
from SGML (ISO 8879). Originally designed to meet the challenges of large-scale
electronic publishing, XML is also playing an increasingly important role in the
exchange of a wide variety of data on the Web and elsewhere. Visit the xml home page for more information.
World Wide Web Consortium. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) develops interoperable technologies (specifications, guidelines, software, and tools) to lead the Web to its full potential. W3C is a forum for information, commerce, communication, and collective understanding.
SKOS provides a standard way to represent knowledge organization systems using the Resource Description Framework (RDF). Encoding this information in RDF allows it to be passed between computer applications in an interoperable way.
Using RDF also allows knowledge organization systems to be used in distributed, decentralised metadata applications. Decentralised metadata is becoming a typical scenario, where service providers want to add value to metadata harvested from multiple sources.
