OpenSearch search standard. Defines OpenSearch Description Document that provides and XML service description that allows client software to formulate search requests to a search endpoint that has an http get request syntax for requesting searches.

The basic concept of OpenSearch is to specify:

  • how to query a web resource,
  • metadata to support syndicating the results

The spec originated in a community effort built around Amazon's A9.com.  The protocol is intended to allow syndication of search results that could then be aggregated by one large index

OASIS Search Web Services group has published an Abstract Protocol Definition of the interface or “binding” (http://docs.oasis-open.org/search-ws/v1.0/opensearch-v1.0.html), which coincides with the community specification published at http://opensearch.org

A set of geospatial and temporal extensions proposed through OpenSearch.org (2007) have been proposed for standardization as an OGC specification
